TRACKING, GROUPING, CLUSTERING, COMPACTING, DIFFERENTIATION

With all of these terms thrown around, I would like to know--what do teachers really think that they mean? How are they used in your school? What do you think is best practice? In the perfect world how would you set up a school or district?

  1. Too hard--too much writing!

Tracking--high, medium, low kids put in classes who move together usually in all content areas--seems old school--reminds me of the reading groups when I was in school in the 50s--cardinals, bluejays and buzzards.

Grouping kids together who are doing the same level in the classroom, just good common sense, groups are fluid, kids move through different groups depending on need, different kids in different groups for different subjects.

Clustering--all gifted kids in the same classroom, good idea, makes differentiation easier, max 5-8 kids

Compacting--pretesting to move through material at a faster pace--all kinds for planning forms (contracts)help facilitate compacting.

Differentiation includes grouping and compacting and clustering. Differentiation is meeting needs of all students in content, process and product based on interest, learning preference, and readiness.

That's the short answers--need clarification. Let me know.

  2. You are a walking dictionary! I thought that this would be a difficult task for most. Thank you!

Does everyone agree with these definitions? Or have anything that they want to add?

I'm kinda paranoid about losing everything I've worked
